JOHN ERNEST GRIMES

JOHN ERNEST GRIMES, 66, OF NEWTON, MASS., AN ACCOMPLISHED MUSICIAN AND TEACHER, PASSED AWAY SURROUNDED BY LOVED ONES AND FRIENDS ON THURSDAY, AUG. 8, 2013. HE WAS A CLASSICAL MUSICIAN WHOSE AUDIENCES REPORTED "BEING INFATUATED WITH THE SPARKLING LYRICISM OF HIS STYLE." JOHN WAS BORN IN 1947 IN KEY WEST, FLA., TO THE LATE JOHN L. AND TOMASA (RUIZ) GRIMES.

HE TOOK UP PERCUSSION AT THE AGE OF 10, AND BEGAN DEVELOPING HIS MUSICAL TALENT UNDER THE MENTORING OF THE LATE WILLIAM HIGGINS, BELOVED MUSIC DIRECTOR OF THE KEY WEST HIGH SCHOOL BAND. YOU MAY REMEMBER JOHN AS DRUM MAJOR. HE WENT ON TO EARN A BACHELOR OF MUSIC IN PERFORMANCE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI IN 1968, FOLLOWED BY A MASTER OF MUSIC DEGREE WITH HONORS FROM THE NEW ENGLAND CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC IN 1975. JOHN PERFORMED PERCUSSION WITH MANY ORGANIZATIONS, INCLUDING THE ORQUESTA SINFONICA DE VENEZUELA, BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, PHILHARMONIA HUNGARICA, POPS ESPLANADE ORCHESTRA, HARVARD CHAMBER ORCHESTRA AND MANY MORE.

HE REGULARLY PERFORMED FOR SEVERAL YEARS IN BOSTON BAROQUE, CANTATA SINGERS, HANDEL & HAYDN SOCIETY, BOSTON BALLET, AND BOSTON LYRIC OPERA. JOHN ALSO WAS THE PRINCIPAL TIMPANIST FOR SARAH CALDWELL'S OPERA COMPANY OF BOSTON FOR 15 SEASONS AND PERFORMED IN MANY OF CALDWELL'S CUTTING-EDGE PRODUCTIONS. OTHER HIGHLIGHTS OF JOHN'S CAREER INCLUDED PERFORMING IN THE MARATHON CONCERT IN CELEBRATION OF LEONARD BERNSTEIN'S 70TH BIRTHDAY AND TOURING AS TIMPANIST WITH THE STAR WARS IN CONCERT ORCHESTRA.

HE WAS A RESPECTED MUSICIANS' ADVOCATE AND SERVED MANY YEARS AS VICE PRESIDENT OF THE BOSTON MUSICIANS ASSOCIATION. IN 2005, HE JOINED THE PERCUSSION FACULTY AT BOSTON CONSERVATORY AS TIMPANI INSTRUCTOR. JOHN WAS A TREASURED FRIEND AND REVERED MENTOR TO MANY WHO PERFORMED, STUDIED AND WORKED WITH HIM AROUND THE WORLD.

HIS FAMILY INCLUDES SISTERS BARBARA (MARC) HERSKOVITZ AND CATHY (DAVID) MORGAN OF TALLAHASSEE, FLA., AND HIS LATE BROTHER RANDY GRIMES; NIECES AND NEPHEWS KIRK (JENNY) JACKSON, GISELLE, MARK HOBBS, KAI, TAD HOBBS, MAX AND DAVID HERSKOVITZ, KIM (MARK) WESTMORELAND, ASHLEY AND MICHAEL, JASON (KALI) GLISSON, KOEN, CINDY GLISSON, GARY (WENDY) MENNINGER AND THE LATE BILLY (ANGELA) MENNINGER OF NORTH CAROLINA, TIM OVERHULTZ OF LEHIGH ACRES, FLA., DOTTIE (BUTCH) BISCHOF, FRED BISCHOF OF ARIZONA, WAYNE, RICHARD AND SUSIE OF DUNNELLON, FLA., NANCY AND BILL GUNTER OF THEODORE, ALA., LINDA, TAMMY, LARRY AND TERRY HENDERSON, MARGARET AND SHIRLEY MARTIN.

WE ALL FEEL A GREAT LOSS, ESPECIALLY THE MUSIC COMMUNITY AND HIS COUNTLESS FRIENDS. A HUGE THANK YOU TO DR. MARIA ARCIA, JOHN AND BETH FUMER, STEVE ISHERWOOD, LILLIAN AND HARVEY SIMONS, NEIL GROVER, FRED HOFFMAN, ROBERT AND ROSIE SACKSTEIN, LONGTIME FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES. JOHN, YOU HAVE LEFT US BUT WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN. A MEMORIAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD AT A DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED.

A SCHOLARSHIP FUND IS BEING SET UP IN JOHN'S NAME PER HIS REQUEST TO HELP ASPIRING YOUNG TIMPANISTS.
