WILLIAM ROBERT

'BOB' SCHONECK

WILLIAM ROBERT SCHONECK, 92, OF KEY WEST PASSED AWAY TUESDAY, AUG. 13, 2013, AT HIS HOME IN CUDJOE GARDENS.

BOB WAS BORN SEPT. 28, 1920, IN KEY WEST TO THE LATE WILLIAM JOHN AND MARY ADELINE (PRITCHARD) SCHONECK. BOB WAS A GRADUATE OF KEY WEST HIGH SCHOOL AND AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE SCHOOL'S BASKETBALL TEAM. BOB WAS ALSO A VETERAN OF WORLD WAR II (1941-1945) IN WHICH HE SERVED AS A MOTOR MACHINIST FIREMAN FIRST CLASS IN THE U.S. COAST GUARD SERVICE AND SUPPORTED THE BATTLE OF SAIPAN. AFTER HIS HONORABLE DISCHARGE, BOB ATTENDED FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY, WHERE HE PLAYED ON THE FIRST BASKETBALL TEAM AT FSU. AFTER HIS GRADUATION IN 1950 WITH A DEGREE IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, BOB HAD A 28-YEAR CAREER AS A CIVIL SERVICE PLANNER AND ESTIMATOR AT THE KEY WEST NAVAL STATION, AND THEN RETIRED AND WENT TO WORK FOR THE MONROE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD, FIRST AS A PLANNER AND ESTIMATOR, AND ENDED HIS WORKING CAREER IN 1982 AS THE DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION.

BOB WAS A DEVOTED HUSBAND, FATHER AND GRANDFATHER. HE WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HIS WIFE OF 62 YEARS, ELSIE STERNS SCHONECK; THEIR BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER, KAY ELIZABETH SCHONECK; AND BROTHERS BEN KENNETH SCHONECK AND RAY ALLEN SCHONECK. HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS SONS WILLIAM "BOB" ROBERT SCHONECK JR. (JANET), GARY ALAN SCHONECK (ELENA), JOHN DOUGLAS SCHONECK (DINA); HIS GRANDCHILDREN STINA SCHONECK BARTLETT (MICHAEL), GESSICA ALISSA SCHONECK, JOHN EVAN SCHONECK, LAUREN ELSIE SCHONECK AND RAQUEL CELIA SCHONECK; HIS BROTHER FRED R. SCHONECK; HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW REGINALD H. STERNS (JEAN); SISTER-IN-LAW VIRGINIA SCHONECK; AND MANY NIECES AND NEPHEWS.

AS PER HIS WISHES, A CELEBRATION OF HIS LIFE WILL BE HELD IN THE NEAR FUTURE. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, CONTRIBUTIONS CAN BE SENT TO THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY OR THE LOWER KEYS FRIENDS OF ANIMALS INC. THE FAMILY WOULD ALSO LIKE TO EXPRESS A SPECIAL THANKS TO HIS WONDERFUL CAREGIVER, BERYL PRINCE.
