I wanted to spend a small amount of space in this column writing about a subject you may find helpful when you're out there exercising. I have been thinking about this for some time now and thought I'd pass it on to dedicated Mr. Fitness-philes!
Have you ever counted the total amount of repetitions you've performed during your workout? I'm talking about each and every rep that you've done, whether it be lifting weights or aerobic activity or just plain old walking. Think about it: Just how many reps have I done?
I've counted my total rep output many, many times over the years. I have done as few as 60 reps during an entire workout. I have done in excess of 3,500 reps in a single training session as well. My head is reeling just thinking about it.
The reason I note this is to establish exactly how much work I've performed in a single session. It's called Watts, a measure of work performed. In essence, I asked, what did I actually do for that particular training day? I took care to note how many of those reps were good, high quality, perfectly performed reps, too.
That last sentence brings me to the heart of my thoughts. When you're doing your exercises, take care and realize how many of those reps are truly good reps and how many are only "going through the motion" reps. See what I'm getting at? Many people, (and you may be one of them) go to the gym and do wasted rep after rep, never finding and reaching their full potential. My idea is to extract a maximum of "clean" repetitions during your limited opportunity to do so.
If you notice that you've done 159 reps during your weight-lifting workout, for instance, try and think how many were of a productive kind. Perhaps that day only 38 of the 159 were quality reps -- that's 23.8 percent. Could be worse. But we need 90 percent or better if this workout thing is to be successful and worth it. In this manner we ensure that our limited time exercising is put to the greatest results-producing good we can muster. Resolve to create as many "clean reps" as you can each and every session.
I believe your results will skyrocket by simply adding this technique to your now growing exercise arsenal.
Do yourself a favor and add up all of your repetitions during exercising and write it down.
You can bet that the next workout session you will do will produce a more effective training day then you'd have ever have imagined possible!
