WILLIAM K. HAZELTON

William Karl Hazelton, 64, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, of an apparent cardiac arrest.

Predeceased by his parents, James and Alice (Kindt); he is survived by his life partner of nearly 36 years, Gary Gethen; his brother John and wife Barrie; sister Jane Gauss; nephews Joseph and Brad; and niece Lisa.

Bill grew up in Mount Kisco, N.Y., and spent his summers in Northern Wisconsin on Razorback Lake. He attended Ripon College, Wis. Upon graduation with a BA in history, he was commissioned a second lieutenant from the ROTC program. Bill retired from the Army with an honorable discharge and the rank of major.

Bill and Gary met in 1977 and this began the next chapter in his life -- purchasing a farm in Blue River, Wis., and creating Birch Hill Farm, a perennial-flower nursery for 14-plus years.

He was involved with local politics with the Board of Richwood Township and the local Fire Board. Bill was appointed to the Lower Wisconsin Riverway Board by the governor of the state of Wisconsin when it was created.

Bill moved onto Key West, Fla., in 1994 and received his calling with God and became very involved in the MCC-Key West Church. Bill was involved in many activities with the goal of assisting those with less and in need.

Bill and Gary recently moved to Spring Hill, Fla., to be closer to the Gethen family to be there when needed. Bill will be greatly missed.

A life that has made a difference in so many other lives will be well remembered.

A soul that has lifted up other souls and encouraged the climb will be well honored.

A person who turned the spirit of God's love into living action will be well revered.

This was Bill.

A memorial service will be held on Nov. 23, 2013, in Key West. Details will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
