Miami man charged in May's fatal wreck

A Miami man has been charged with manslaughter in a fiery head-on crash in Islamorada that killed a woman in May.

Didier Kichner Miles, 24, was charged Thursday with DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, DUI causing serious bodily injury, four counts of DUI with property damage and leaving the scene of a crash.

Miles turned himself in Thursday at the Monroe County Detention Center on Plantation Key.

Kristine Marie Rivera, 22, was airlifted after the May 13 crash at Mile Marker 89 to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami, where she died.

She was a passenger in a 2007 Honda Element driven by Miles, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Miles reportedly hit a taxi head-on at 5:21 p.m.

Cab driver Charles Akullian, 71, was treated and released at Mariners Hospital in Tavernier.

Troopers described the crash as follows: Rivera initially was driving the Element, and rear-ended another Honda at Mile Marker 85.1, south of Snake Creek Bridge. Miles reportedly offered the other driver cash, but it was declined. So they left, with Miles now driving the Element.

While leaving the scene, he sideswiped another vehicle, troopers said after the crash.

Miles continued north over the bridge and into Islamorada, where he apparently lost control and hit the taxi, which caught on fire. Law enforcement officers quelled the blaze.

U.S. 1 was closed for five hours in both directions while troopers worked to clear the multiple crash scenes.
