Steady progress can beat 'freshman 15' pounds

Dear Mr. Fitness:

Two weeks ago, I began a fitness program in hopes of shedding the "freshman 15" I gained in college. I walk for about 50 minutes every morning, lift weights about twice a week, and eat a low-sugar diet. So far I've lost 3 pounds in the last two weeks. How long before I notice stubborn cellulite disappearing? I'm in my early 20s, 5 foot, 5 inches tall, and weigh about 130 pounds. Will it all disappear eventually? Thanks for your help.

-- Hopeful

Dear Hopeful:

Sounds to me that you are well on your way to a fit and toned body. You have many things going for you. You are young and full of energy! You are doing great! You have lost 3 pounds in two weeks. Not bad!

Without having you in front of me to assess your genetic predisposition for fat distribution, as well as a precise daily dietary food intake, this will be difficult. But here goes: If you don't do anything different in your eating and exercise program, you will lose approximately 12.8 pounds of weight in the next 60 days. Pretty close to your "freshman 15." In 60 days. Not bad.

I have based this number on the information you have disclosed. If the weight loss is mostly fat, then I would say yes, you will lose the cellulite. Without looking directly at you, I would say perhaps the cellulite will go away. I cannot give you a fair assessment. Is the cellulite in only one area? Is it all over? How bad? You see what I mean?

Cellulite (the dimpling of skin) is a genetic trait. Some of us have it, others don't -- nor will they ever get it, no matter how much weight they gain, no matter what they eat. Great, huh?

You can control cellulite through diet and exercise, as you are finding out. But if you are predisposed to having cellulite, you must be vigilant or it can creep up and get you.

By the way, the term "cellulite" is not a clinical name. It was coined (made up) by a socialite female in Beverly Hills, Calif., in 1975. It is, quite simply, plain, ordinary fat!

Keep doing what you are doing! I think you are on your way to losing the "cellulite" forever!
