Garcia rents apt. in KW
Congressman Joe Garcia (D-Miami) finalized a one-year lease for a studio apartment on Grinnell Street Sunday, according to his spokeswoman Jennifer George-Nichol.
The move is part of a campaign promise the freshman congressman made to maintain a residence in his district, which includes Monroe County.
Currently, Garcia has a home Miami, outside his district, where he lives near his daughter. He also has a residence in Washington, D.C. Recently, Garcia began taking heat from Republicans for failing to live in the same areas as his constituents.
Community college foundation honors scholarship students, donors
The Florida Keys Community College Foundation hosted a scholarship social Thursday evening at the Tennessee Williams Theatre s to recognize scholarship recipients and the donors who make higher education possible.
The FKCC Foundation raises scholarship funds from private donors, community organizations and public agencies, and distributed nearly $100,000 in scholarships last year, according to a press release from the school.
Bill Seeker, FKCC president emeritus and founder of the Sue and Albert Seeker First Generation in College Scholarship, commended the students on Thursday for their pursuit of higher education.
"Being a first-generation college student myself, I understand the struggles they face," said Seeker, who served as president of FKCC for 28 years.
During the social, students shared personal stories about the opportunities that FKCC Foundation scholarships have provided.
College President Jonathan Gueverra thanked the scholarship supporters for helping shape a better community.
The event also featured the introduction of the FKCC Student Investment Club, initiated by long-time FKCC philanthropist M. Pat Miller. The first of its kind for community colleges nationwide, FKCC's Student Investment Club will utilize real dollars in its investments, potentially raising funds to support students and programs at FKCC. Miller and other community investment experts will guide the club in long-term investing strategies.
