Helpline offers call service
The nonprofit Helpline provides free daily "reassurance" calls to anyone living in Monroe County.
In place since 1985, Helpline's Reassurance Program consists of daily phone calls to anyone who could benefit from a regular check-in, including the elderly, disabled, homebound or someone on a strict medication regimen.
"Anyone who would need a wellness call, a daily check," said Helpline CEO Kristen Wheeler. "This is totally free to clients." To take part in the program, call Helpline's office at 305-292-8445.
Helpline is a 24-hour confidential crisis intervention, information and referral service. The hotline number is 305-296-HELP (4357).
Registration for runoff open
While it's too late to register to vote in Tuesday's city election, residents may register to vote in case there is a runoff, which would be held Nov. 5.
Registration is open until Oct. 7 for anyone wanting to vote if a runoff is necessary.
The city ballot includes contests for the offices of mayor and District 1 city commissioner, and, in the only race that could force a runoff, a spot on the Utility Board, with three candidates: Cheryl Cates, Tim Root and Vidal.
As of Thursday, 786 people had voted early and 1,934 absentee ballots had been turned in, said Supervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin. Early voting runs through Saturday and absentee ballots must be turned in by 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Man pulls pellet gun on neighbor
A 34-year-old Key Largo man remained jailed Thursday night after deputies arrested him on suspicion of felony aggravated assault.
Todd Price Alexander threatened his neighbor with a pellet gun resembling a real handgun after the pair got into an argument late Wednesday over who could use the shared water line at Point Pleasant Drive, deputies reported.
Alexander was doing laundry when his neighbor arrived home from work after 10 p.m. and wanted to take a shower, which requires detaching the water line they share.
The neighbor told deputies that he and Alexander exchanged heated words before Alexander went into his home and came out with what appeared to be a real handgun.
