Gary E. Maitland has been named editor of The Key West Citizen, effective Sept. 30, by publisher Paul A. Clarin. He will replace Tom Tuell, who resigned in August.
Maitland brings more than 30 years of newspaper management experience to his new post, having served as editor, publisher and general manager for newspapers in Tennessee, Mississippi, Florida, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and Alabama. Maitland began his career as a county and city government reporter in his hometown of Humboldt, Tenn., and has been managing editor of the Leesburg (Fla.) Daily Commercial for the past three years.
Maitland will be in charge of all news operations at The Citizen and its Internet news site, keysnews.com.
His depth of experience, dedication to journalism and ability to direct and develop newsroom talent make him an excellent choice to direct the day-to-day operations of The Citizen's newsroom, said Clarin.
Maitland's top priority will be strengthening the emphasis on local news.
"This is a wonderful opportunity to shape the future of a vibrant newspaper that continues to be an essential part of the communities it serves," said Maitland. "These are challenging times in the newspaper industry, but the newspapers best positioned to succeed are those committed to local news."
