Cats don't say it -- they spray it: Neutering and other fixes

Q: My parents adopted a 5-year-old male, intact cat. This cat has sprayed everything in the house, including my parents' clothes when they are not wearing them. When I go to put the cat outside it runs and hides, preferring to stay indoors. His territory in the house is already thoroughly marked. I am sure that having him fixed at this late stage would not help at all. What suggestions, if any...
