A 29-year-old inmate was found dead in his cell Friday afternoon, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said Saturday morning.
Key Largo resident Glenn Breeland Jr. hung himself with his bedsheet, spokeswoman Deputy Becky Herrin said in a 9:30 a.m. email. Deputies found his body about 5 p.m. Friday, she said.
One end of the sheet was around his neck, and the other was around a shelf; he was kneeling forward on the floor, which presumably cut off his air supply, Herrin said.
Officers, nurses from the jail unit and responding paramedics all reportedly tried to revive Breeland with CPR and an AED (automated external defibrillator).
Breeland was arrested in May after allegedly beating and choking his ex-girlfriend, according to Herrin.
Detective Deborah Ryan from the Sheriff's Major Crimes Unit and crime scene Detective John Underwood responded to the jail to investigate the death.
