Little to talk about at meeting

KEY LARGO -- The Key Largo Wastewater Board was to meet Tuesday, Oct. 8, despite having very little to talk.

District Manager Margaret Blank and board chairman Robby Majeska were traveling in Tallahassee to meet about state grant money. Plant Manager Dan Saus also could not be at the meeting.

The only action item was to approve the minutes from a previous meeting. The board was to hear a verbal report about refinancing a loan.

"I don't know what you're going to talk about," Blank told the board at their previous meeting.

Majeska joked the board could discuss snacks. During another recent meeting with little on the agenda, the board took some criticism from a speaker for eating snack foods. This prompted the district to print out signs for their next meeting that said district money does not pay for the snacks.

In an interview, Blank said the items on the Tuesday's agenda could be moved to a later meeting.

The district's board has faced some public criticism recently for conducting so-called transition meetings with few items on the agenda. Board members are paid $390 per meeting and can get paid for up to three meetings per month.

The district considered rescheduling the meeting, but board member Andy Tobin said his calendar is already set and the rest of the board agreed.

Board member Steve Gibbs acknowledged to the Free Press there was little to talk about at the meeting.

"I don't know that we need to meet," Gibbs said.

He added that he is doing some research and will come up with a few things to talk about at the meeting.

Results from the meeting were not available at press time.
