190 years later, founding document comes home
Maritime Historical Society donates items

Key West's founding document, which also established the first Navy base here, has returned home after an absence of 190 years.

Navy Commodore David Porter's letter from 1823 established the island as "Allenton," and the base as "Thompson's Battery." Porter ordered the troops to raise the flag and conduct a 17-gun salute on April 6, 1823.
