Robert Lastres Sr., 79, of Key West, Fla., peacefully passed on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013.

Robert was born to the late Aurelio Rodriquez Lastres and Maria Stella Gutierrez Lastres on August 5, 1934, in Key West. He was a second generation Conch and the seventh of nine children.

Robert graduated from Key West High School in 1954. He excelled in the sport of baseball and softball. The 1953 baseball title was the first state championship in the school's history, and Robert was the team captain. His love of the game didn't stop there; Robert also coached the youth leagues in town and never missed his two son's games.

Born into a musical family, Robert was blessed with natural talents. With a true golden voice, he and his brother George combined their talents in a few bands of their own, like "The Ember's" and "The Gems Tones." He also learned how to play the drums from one of the greatest drummers in town, his brother Crip.

Robert truly loved his home and the people who lived there. He served his city for almost 60 years working in the judicial system. He worked well over 20 years on the Key West Police Department, one year in the Sheriff's Department and 34 years at the Public Defender's Office. He also served the court as a Spanish interpreter.

Those who knew Robert would say he had a tremendous sense of humor and was a colorful storyteller. He loved telling a joke as well as playing practical jokes. He was also one of the sharpest dressers around town, never a hair out of place.

Robert, like all true Conchs, had many nicknames. He was called "Robbie," "Cat Head," "Doctor," and I'm sure a few more. But his favorite nickname was when his grandchildren called him "Pa."

Robert was married to Karen K. Lastres for more than 20 years; and there were five children in the family.

Those left to honor Robert's memory include his children Kimberly (Roland) Flowers, Kelli (Mundy) Mesa, Tracy Bréon (Ronnie) Degenhardt, Bobby (Lisa) Lastres and Marc (Mary) Lastres; his grandchildren Melissa, Aimee, Roland Jr., Bobby, Samantha, Lauren, Alexis, Nick, Daniel, Jacob, Maleah, Matt and Kenny; his great-grandchildren Clayton and Amelia; his brothers Danny and George; and his sister Elda.

Robert was predeceased by his parents Aurelio and Maria Lastres; his brothers Aurelio Jr. "Crip," Gabriel and Adolph "Fito;" and his sisters Anna "Louise" and Christina "Mina."

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Basilica of St. Mary Star of the Sea, 1010 Windsor Lane, Key West.

A "Celebration of Life" will follow the service from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Rusty Anchor, 5501 5th Ave., Stock Island.
