1913 Future commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, Leonard F. Chapman Jr., was born in the Methodist church parsonage at 411 Simonton St.
1953 A record number of voters re-elected Mayor C.B. Harvey, who faced three opponents. Delio Cobo and Louis Carbonell were elected to the City Commission. Two other commission seats were decided in a runoff election.
1954 Filming began on the screen adaptation of Tennessee Williams' play the "Rose Tattoo." The first day of shooting took place at the house next door to Williams' own home on Duncan Street.
1965 Mayor Kermit Lewin cut the ribbon to open the Sears department store in the new shopping center on North Roosevelt Boulevard.
1970Bill Carter of Marathon was elected to the County Commission.
1981 Key West voters approved a 2 percent tourist tax that would be used to promote Key West as a tourism destination. Estimates showed the tax would generate $425,000 to $450,000 a year.
1987Richard Heyman was elected mayor of Key West. Virginia Panico and Harry Powell were elected to the commission.
1992 The voters of Key West overwhelmingly approved the city's purchase of the Key West Bight. In Monroe County, Shirley Freeman and Mary Kay Reich were elected to the commission.
1998Nora Williams and George Neugent were elected to the County Commission and Ken Sorensen was elected state representative.
