Donald J Smith

Donald J. Smith, 78, of Waterford, Vt., passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, in Key West, Fla. He was born Jan. 6, 1935, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Joseph and Martha Smith.

Don had an adventurous spirit and whether he was sailing in the Florida Keys and Bahamas, or living alongside the river in Vermont he enjoyed the peace and serenity of the natural environment. He was equally enthusiastic in his faith in Christ as well as his sobriety. A longtime member of Alcoholics Anonymous, he shared his message of strength, hope and love with many over the years.

He was very proud of his children and is survived by Mark Smith (Kim) of Key West, Fla., Laura Nickel (Alan) of Plainview, N.Y., Donald Smith (Trisha) of Westbury, N.Y., and Christine Lada (Ed) of Westbury, N.Y.; and 10 grandchildren, Alyssa, Rebecca, Sarah and Brigette Nickel, Melissa, Elizabeth, and Allison Smith, and Ryan, Patrick and Kevin Lada.

A funeral Mass will take place at 9:45 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8 at the Parish of St. Brigid, 75 Post Ave., Westbury, N.Y., followed at 11:45 a.m. by a graveside service with military honors at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingsdale, N.Y.
