First State Bank of the Florida Keys continued its support of Fair Insurance Rates of Monroe (FIRM) as the group persists in its ongoing fight against unfair windstorm insurance rates and begin to tackle the flood rate increases of the Biggert-Waters Act for Monroe County residents and businesses.

With the help of First State Bank's $1,000 donation, FIRM will continue to oppose excessive, discriminatory property insurance rates by staying active at the legislative level and monitoring initiatives and events that have the potential to impact insurance rates. Now battling not only windstorm increases, FIRM's newest challenge is the flood insurance rate spikes aimed at revitalizing the National Flood Insurance Program under the Biggert-Waters Act.

"We applaud First State Bank's responsiveness as we take on our newest challenge -- the flood insurance issue," said FIRM President Heather Carruthers. "Their loyalty and financial support provide funds that will help us continue our efforts to fight for fair windstorm and flood insurance rates throughout Monroe County."

Although temporarily delayed, these proposed flood increases pose an even more serious threat to our community than any previous insurance rate increase. For more information visit www.firmkeys.org.
