HARC mulls Yates' designs

The Historic Architectural Review Commission is set to decide Tuesday whether the proposed two-story home by designer Debra Yates meets the city guidelines on historic district buildings.

Yates' plans to demolish the single-story house at 717 White St., at the corner of Newton Street in the Meadows neighborhood, and to build a new home are on HARC's 5:30 p.m. Tuesday agenda.

HARC meets at Old City Hall, 510 Greene St. The agenda also includes HARC electing a new chairman.


Free film workshop this weekend

The third annual Film Workshop will be held 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 14 and 9:30 a.m. to noon Dec. 15 at the Tropic Cinema, 416 Eaton St. It's free, but space is limited.

Maria Chavez, longtime South Florida location manager for films and TV, will teach the two-day course.

Participants are asked to bring a camera. Chavez will shoot location photos with the group Saturday afternoon, then give out assignments Sunday morning.

It's presented by the Tropic and Monroe County Tourist Development Council's Florida Keys & Key West Film Commission. Register at or call the TDC office at 305-296-1552 and ask for Rita.


Holiday decorating contest

The deadline for businesses to enter the Key West Chamber of Commerce's annual Island of Lights decorating contest is noon Monday.

Awards will be presented for first, second, and third place in two categories: Small business outdoor or single window display, and large business outdoor or multiple window display.

There also will be an award for small and large displays in the Historic Seaport for a business or business vessel.
