Free pet adoptions

The Home for the Holidays pet adopt-a-thon is on at the Florida Keys SPCA, 5230 College Road, Stock Island, offering pets for none of the regular costs.

More than 100 homeless animals, mostly dogs and cats but a few guinea pigs, await a permanent home. All pets up for adoption have been spayed or neutered.

For the holidays, the SPCA will waive all adoption fees through Saturday. Hours are 12 to 6 p.m. weekdays and 12 to 4 p.m. Saturday.

For details, call 305-294-4857 or visit www.fkspca.org.

The city's bus service will offer free rides in the Lower Keys for two days this holiday season: Dec. 23-24. Buses and other transit services do not run on Christmas Day.

City commissioners approved the free rides at their Dec. 3 meeting, signing a different version of the ordinance that appears online attached to the agenda, the clerk's office said Monday. A prior story in The Citizen reported different dates for free bus rides based on the agenda item.

Also for the holiday season, the city offers free parking dowtown at meters and spots along the pay stations from Dec. 23-25.

Enter holiday decorating contest by Friday

There's no snow on the sidewalks and Santa may slip into sandals, but every December The Key West Chamber of Commerce helps ensure a bright holiday season with its "Island of Lights" holiday decorating contest.

All businesses, large and small, Chamber members and non-members, are encouraged to deck their halls to enhance the island with season's greetings. The contest is reserved for businesses.; residential displays will not be judged.

Decorations are judged in two categories: Small business outdoor or single window display and large business outdoor or multiple window display. An additional category includes businesses and/or vessels in the Historic Seaport neighborhood.

The contest is open to all local businesses. There is no entry fee, but contestants must register with the Chamber of Commerce by noon Friday to be included in the judging.

To enter, call Nancy Caruthers at the Chamber at 305-294-2587 or email info@keywestchamber.org.
