Verna (Judd) Garwood, 74, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at home with family, of complications from ovarian cancer. Verna battled gallantly with 100 percent strength during her fight.

Born on Feb. 13, 1939, in Ashland, she was preceded in death by her father, Frank Judd; mother, Edith; stepfather, John Miyo; and her son Franklin Garwood.

Verna and Ron raised their family in Florence, N.J., and Verna was always the compass of family values and traditions for her children, who, in turn, pass those same values on to their children today. Verna was always there with a soft heart or a stern kick to send you on your way.

She and her husband, Ron, opened Mount Holly Surgical Supply in 1971, and also opened Ummm Ice Cream Parlor with their son Ron Jr. in 1982 and R&V Medical. In 1994, they sold Mount Holly Surgical Supply, and in 1984, their son Matthew took over Ummm Ice Cream Parlor and continues the tradition today.

In retirement, Verna and Ron became snowbirds, spending time in Sugarloaf Key and in the family Pocono house. For many years they traveled in their RV, until selling it and buying a place in Big Pine Key, where she always had a joke for the day to add to the cheer of their Florida friends. Her family and friends will miss her smile, humor and delicious RV recipes.

She loved spending time with her grandchildren, whether it was taking them on a trip to the nail salon, out for tea, or making recipes in her kitchen. Adventure never intimidated her, either -- cross-country skiing, fishing, hiking, boating or just a drive with her husband. Verna was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Pocono Lakes and St. Francis Episcopal Church in Big Pine Key, Fla.

Verna will be deeply missed by her husband, best friend and traveling partner of 55 years, Ronald Sr.; her children, Ronald Jr., Jeffrey and wife, Cheri, and Matthew and wife, Natalie; her sisters, Susan Judd, Rise and husband, Armas Hill; grandchildren, Drew, Marissa, Paige, Ava, Anna and Audra; her nephew, Stephen and wife, Tracey, and their children, Zachary and Evan; niece, Heather and her children, Tyler and Alexis; along with many friends and family all over the country. Mom, your strength will be with us always.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at the St. Francis-in-the-Keys Episcopal Church, 1600 Key Deer Blvd., Big Pine Key, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of Verna Garwood to the St. Francis-in-the-Keys Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 430645, Big Pine Key, FL 33043.
