Safe boating program
MARATHON -- Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 13-2 in Marathon is offering a six-session "Boating Skills and Seamanship" program as a public service beginning Jan. 14 at the Marathon Senior Center on 33rd Street Gulf.
Classes will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Topics covered include boat equipment; boat handling and safety; waterway markings; navigation and charting; navigation rules; lines and knots; weather and more.
The program is $55 per person or $80 for two family members who share one set of materials. The price includes the textbook, boating skills and seamanship.

Holiday safety tips

• Turn off holiday lights when leaving and before going to bed at night.
• Unplug strings of lights before replacing bulbs; replace burned-out bulbs promptly with ones of the same wattage.
• Never use electric lights on a metallic tree.
