Alcohol sales operation nets 2 citations

On Friday, the Special Investigations Division conducted an operation checking businesses that sell alcohol in the Marathon area. In all, there were 10 businesses checked including restaurants, convenience stores and bars.

Two of the businesses served alcohol to minors during the investigations. Both were given notices to appear before a Monroe County judge. The violations could net up to 60 days in jail, a $500 fine, $235 in court cost, $75 in cost of prosecution, and $40 in cost of investigation.

The businesses where the alcohol was sold were Shell, 11100 Overseas Highway, and Mobile, 13155 Overseas Highway, Marathon.

The licensee violations are:

First offense, $1,000 fine and seven-day suspension

Second offense, $3,000 fine and 30-day suspension

Third offense, revocation of license.

The remaining businesses checked were in compliance with the law. This operation was conducted in cooperation with the Monroe County Coalition for a Safe and Drug Free Community.

Holiday shopping safety

The Key West Police Department warns shoppers to beware of crime during the holiday season, offering the following tips:

• Stay alert and be aware of what is going on around you.

• Deter pickpockets. Carry your purse close to your body, or your wallet inside a coat or front trouser pocket.

• Tell a security guard or store employee if you see an unattended bag or package. The same applies when taking mass transit: report any unattended packages to security or staff.

• Always leave yourself extra time. By giving yourself extra time, you'll be able to remind yourself of these basic shopping safety tips.

• If you see anything suspicious, call 911.

Discount utility program

Enrollment for Keys Energy Services' (KEYS) discount program for qualifying senior citizens or disabled American veterans who are residential customers is now open.

Enrollment for this program runs until March 31 and customers who have previously participated in the program must requalify. Once qualified, customers will receive a $9.53 discount on their monthly energy bills in 2014.
