At 6 pounds, 2 ounces, bouncing baby boy Jase Griffin is Key West's first-born child of 2014.
Jase came into the world at 12:08 a.m. Thursday as the second child of Sarah and Seth Griffin, who moved to Key West in July from Long Island, N.Y.
Seth hails from New York state, while Sarah comes from North Carolina.
Seth is currently stationed at Coast Guard Sector Key West.
"I'm very surprised that he was the first [baby of the year,] Seth said. "We're just really blessed to have him."
"He's healthy and beautiful," the new mother said.
The couple's first child, Mackenzie, will celebrate her second birthday later this month.
"We've explained to her what's happening but she doesn't quite get it yet," Sarah said with a smile. "Hopefully, she'll warm to him soon."
The couple arrived at the hospital around 9:30 p.m. on New Year's Day.
"He was actually 18 days early," Seth said.
"But I was ready," his wife added.
Sarah said that her second pregnancy was much easier than her first.
"Oh yeah, it was a lot faster," she said. "It was a piece of cake."
