50 Years Ago

• Former Mayor and Ann Cobo celebrated their anniversary. Mrs. Ann Cobo was given the first Community Service Award. The award was sponsored by The Key West Citizen and was presented by Publisher Norman Artman at a dinner at the Holiday Inn.

• Mayor Kermit Lewin proclaimed "Courtesy Week." The program was sponsored by the retail merchants division of the Key West Chamber of Commerce.

• Sondra Knight was crowned to reign as queen over the 1964 Monroe County Fair.

• The Key West Chamber of Commerce membership drive started at a breakfast meeting at the Town House Motor Inn.

Betty Fernandez, 32, was on trial for second degree murder in Criminal Court. Fernandez was charged with the knife murder of her husband, Armando.

• James F. Reynolds, 63, died in Monroe General Hospital after a long illness.

• Ralph Maribone Jr. was installed as president of the Key West chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police.
