on this day in 1964....

• Mr. and Mrs. Aquillino Lopez celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. They were married in their native Spain in 1909 but had lived in Key West ever since and operated Delmonico's Restaurant at 218 Duval St.

• Commander J.D. Huggins, commanding officer Naval Ordnance Unit, presented Eddie Baso Jr. a 20-year pin and "Recognition of Service" award.

• The trial of Betty Fernandez for the murder of her husband was in its second day. Caridad Gomez was the key witness because Fernandez allegedly stabbed her husband in the heart in Gomez's apartment in March 1963.

• Hans Lund died at the age of 91. He was born in Denmark, but served in and retired from the U.S. Army. He was a veteran of the Spanish American War.

• Mrs. Jeanette Fields was elected president of the Monroe County Mental Health Unit.

• Marine Sergeant James R. Hauss was assigned to the Second Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
