New dog park blessing

Local pets may receive a special blessing from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the new public dog park at Stock Island Marina Village, 7009 Shrimp Rd.

The "Blessing of the Animals" is to celebrate the opening of the area's new community dog park.

Refreshments will be served. For information, call 305-294-2288.

The marina village bills itself as the largest deep water marina in the Florida Keys, where the docks are a mix of liveaboards, cruisers, commercial fishermen, artists and tourists.


Flag football tournament

The 23 annual Kelly McGillis Classic International Women and Girls Flag Football Championship and World Challenge VII will hold opening ceremonies from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday at the Rum Barrel, 528 Front St.

McGillis, the actor and former Key West resident, is scheduled to appear at the event, along with teams.

A players' parade starts at 5 p.m. with McGillis as the grand marshal ,and she is set to give out some awards on Sunday, the program states.

All games will be played Friday through Sunday at the Wicker Field Sports Complex in New Town at Flagler Avenue and 14th Street.


Trash day rule enforcement

The city's code enforcement department has brought four cases against locals accused of leaving their trash cans out past the required time period, in light of the new once-weekly garbage pickup schedule.

A hearing is set for 1:30 p.m. Jan. 29 at Old City Hall, 510 Greene St., where the agenda includes the alleged violations. All four cases are aimed at homes on Johnson Street in Old Town, between the 1200 and 1700 blocks.

A fifth case was lodged against a man on Seminary Street who put out yard debris but didn't place it in a container nor on the proper pickup day.
