Navy Special Ops: A Key West history
Historic underwater training in KW led to today's SEALs

In the late 1950s, then-Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer Don Stone was in a boat under the cover of darkness about a mile off Fort Zachary Taylor watching scuba students attempt a one-mile swim.

The current was strong and it was still early in the exercise when the screams began, the 83-year-old retired SEAL instructor recalled Friday from his home in Boca Raton.
