50 years ago:

The crew members of the Liberian freighter that went aground on the banks off Mexico were brought to Key West by the salvage ship Cable. The Cable went to aid the vessel but found the damage so extensive that it had to be abandoned.

The U.S. State Department released the four Cuban fishing boats to the State of Florida for prosecuting. Two crew members were granted political asylum.

The Heart Association of Miami and Key West presented the Golden Heart and Key Chain to Dr. Herman K. Moore for his many years of work.

J. Winifield Russell, 73, died in Monroe General Hospital after a long illness.
