Mock Scenario tests preparedness

The Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) officials will conduct a Radiological Emergency Preparedness (REP) drill at the Murray Nelson Government Center in Key Largo from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today.

This is a scheduled practice drill -- not an actual real-world event. No protective actions are required by the general public.

Local residents and passers-by may notice the presence of emergency response vehicles positioned near the Murray Nelson Center, Overseas Highway in Key Largo. These vehicles will be part of the planned practice event and are in no way indicative of an actual threat.

Truck fire closes U.S. 1

The trailer of a tractor-trailer rig caught fire early Thursday at the Mile Marker 60.5 on U.S. 1. The driver pulled into the median and detached his truck from the burning trailer, which he said contained "convenience store supplies."

The roadway was closed in that vicinity from 2:30 a.m. to 3:25 a.m. as fire crews extinguished the blaze and the debris was cleared from the roadway.

The driver was uninjured.

FHP is investigating the incident.
