Think about how you burn what you eat

Dear Mr. Fitness:

Why is it that I walk and run for more than one hour every day and still can't lose this weight? I mean every day! I'm now trying the Stairmaster three times a week along with running. I have been doing this for four months and still no weight loss! I'm a 42-year-old housewife with plenty of time to do whatever it takes to get skinny once and for all. Why? Why can't I lose weight?

Dear Sick and Tired:

What I think we have here is lack of sufficient muscle mass to help burn the necessary calories of fat. You people out there must stop and realize one immutable fact: To burn fat calories, you must up your metabolic rate. Period. How do we up our metabolic rate? We exercise. Right?

Wrong!

You can exercise your butt off (and no doubt have) with little or no results. I am certain many others are in the same predicament. If you lack enough voluntary contractile fibers, you will never, and I mean never, lose all of the body fat you want. I don't care what all of the diet books out there drone on about, all of the exercise gurus on TV spout ad nauseam about, you will need to build up your muscles to kick start your metabolism.

Plain and simple.

You must do resistance exercising to get your body to burn the fat. Any type of resistance will do. Yes, weightlifting is the preferred and fastest way, but do any type and you'll get some muscles. You don't have to end up looking like Hulk Hogan for this to work properly. That's not what I mean. I will tell you this, if you work out with the weights (or any resistance movements) three times a week along with your aerobics, this will do more for you than you can imagine.

When your body has properly stimulated muscles, you burn high amounts of fat whether you are exercising or only sleeping! That's correct. While sleeping, you will have a higher metabolic rate. What's not to love? Burning fat while sleeping! How cool is that?

Get on a program of resistance training your whole body three times weekly and I can pretty much guarantee weight loss in one week. That is correct. You will lose weight after the first week! Every week after that, the weight should be shedding off of you at about a one-to-two pound clip per week. That's not too bad! Please give it a try. What have you got to lose?
