Robert Alton Higgs I, age 76, passed away in Port St. Lucie on December 9, 2013. Born in Key West on October 28, 1937, to Virgil "Freckles" Higgs and Ruby Aletha Pent of Key West. Robert, "Foothabumba," was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother.

He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 51 years, Kassy; his four children, Robert A. Higgs II (Cindie), Melissa "Missy" Higgs, Rodney "Footha" Higgs (Amanda), and Ronald "Skeeter" Higgs; his grandchildren, Taron Wirth (Trevor), Julian Higgs, Robert A. Higgs III, and Mackenzie Higgs; great-grandchildren Carter and Ava Wirth. He is also survived by his brothers, Ervin Higgs (Sandy), William "Willie" Higgs, and Gordon T. Higgs; nieces and nephews, Mindy Vinson (Steve), Katie Wyrwicki (Martin), William Higgs Jr., and Gordy Higgs. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and niece, Meredith Higgs.

Robert, also lovingly known as Mr. Higgs, was the auto mechanics teacher at Key West High School for 20 years. Many of his former students have shared fond memories of him through the years. He had a good heart and an old-fashioned spirit; he was one of a kind. The void in our hearts can never be filled.

Graveside services for family and friends will be held on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2 p.m. at the Key West Cemetery.
