Park projects up for review

MARATHON -- After a capital projects budget review last week, the Marathon City Council was poised to go forward with several community park projects from restrooms to a fitness trail at its Tuesday, Feb. 11, meeting.

The meeting took place after press time.

Staff was seeking approval of Oceanfront Park improvements to include restrooms, Sombrero Beach Lighthouse Monument and a nature and fitness trail at 9805 Overseas Highway, while the Community Park was set to receive irrigation and water re-use equipment.

On the agenda, Jack Burrie was scheduled to give a presentation on behalf of the Florida Lighthouse Association Florida Keys Reef Lights Foundation.

Meanwhile, Marathon's advisory charter review committee comprised of appointments by each council person met for the first time Monday, Feb. 10, at the Marathon fire station.

Mayor Dick Ramsay appointed Jason Koler; Vice Mayor Chris Bull named John Bartus, a former city mayor; Richard Keating selected former mayor Mike Cinque; Mark Senmartin chose attorney Frank Greenman; and Ginger Snead appointed Karen Farley Wilkinson.

At its meeting Feb. 5, the council decided to allow its accounting firm, led by Peter Rosasco, to conduct the city manager recruitment effort in conjunction with the city's human resources director, Diana Naylor. Rosasco's firm completed the previous manager search for Marathon for about $9,400.

Rosasco said his staff would gather resumes for the council to whittle down to five or six promising candidates, as was done in the prior search. The estimated time frame is around 10 weeks.

Ramsay led the charge to conduct the search using city staff rather than hiring a recruiting firm. Four firms had offered their services with proposals in the $15,000 to $20,000 range.

Regarding the manager's contract, City Attorney John Herin's law firm is developing a draft with council input.
