50 years ago:

Fidel Castro met the four Cuban boats released from custody in Key West and claimed the boats and men were robbed of the Cuban Flag and clothing while in custody of the sheriff.

William Allen Parrish, known as the "unofficial Mayor of Marathon" died in Miami. He had been in Marathon for more than 50 years and was a former Monroe County Commissioner.

The Key West Chamber of Commerce was setting up a display of mounted fish, working with a Pfleuger Company taxidermist that was preparing the fish. There were 63 kinds of fish in the display with plans to add 74 more. The display was valued at $17,000.

Thompson Enterprises ran a half page advertisement in appreciation of A. Maitland Adams' 50 years of service to the company.

Key West native Frank E. Pinder was promoted to deputy Director of the U.S. Agency for International Development Mission to Ghana.
