Gavin elected to Good Health board
Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner Jacqueline Gavin has been elected to serve on the Good Health Clinic's board of directors for a three-year term.
Having worked as a nurse for 25 years, Gavin has been employed at Mariners Hospital since 2011.
Gavin also is a member of the Community Health Action Response Team, a partnership of the Monroe County Health Department and CDC to evaluate chronic disease in the local population. She is also co-investigator for a four year study entitled "Cardiovascular Risk Reduction in Underserved Rural Communities," funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
Other board members overseeing the only 100 percent free clinic in the Florida Keys are Chair Chris Vogt, Vice Chair Claudia Moran Stober, Treasurer James Grainger, Secretary Dawn Stavor, Scott C. Black, Dan Cole, John D. El-Koury, David DeHaas, Kerry Foote and Neal Rakov.
The Good Health Clinic serves more than 600 Upper Keys residents and employees who are at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Sponsored in part by Baptist Health South Florida, the clinic receives no state or federal funding.
McPeak honored by engineers
Samantha McPeak, a University of Alabama senior from Key Largo, was recognized by the Power and Energy Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, or IEEE, as a John W. Estey Outstanding PES Scholar for 2013-14.
McPeak is one of the best and brightest at U.A., and this recognition is fantastic, said university representative Adam Jones.
New doctor opens shop in Big Pine

Woods marks 20 years at First State
First State Bank of the Florida Keys congratulates Doris Woods, lead teller at the Key Largo branch, on her 20th year with the bank.
She started with First State Bank in early 1994 as part-time teller at the Key Largo Branch. Later, Woods progressed to full-time teller and teller supervisor. She was promoted to her current position of lead teller in 1996.
"For 20 years, Doris has shown impeccable commitment to serving our customers and the bank," said Laura Brown, assistant vice president and Key Largo branch manager. "We are proud to celebrate this milestone anniversary with her, and look forward to her continued success with First State Bank."
