Conchfest takes place today

The fourth annual Conchfest celebration, organized by the Key West Rotary Club, takes place from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. today at Bayview Park. Admission is free, and all are welcome.

The event will feature some 50 food and arts and crafts vendors, activities for the children, and live music and entertainment for the whole family. Howard Livingston and the Mile Marker 24 Band will be the headline entertainment from 7 to 10 p.m.

The event is sponsored, in part, by Historic Tours of America, the Pier House Resort, and several other local businesses.

All of the proceeds of this event will benefit the Rotary Club of Key West Scholarship Program. The club disburses approximately $33,000 a year in scholarships to graduating students.

UPPER KEYS

Utility scam continues

Florida Keys Electric Co-op officials say a popular nationwide scam that has taken root in Monroe County is widening and they are alerting customers to a new twist.

Scammers are using technology that masks the real phone number they're calling from showing the customer a real utility phone number. Now when customers call an 800 number back, they're getting an automated system that sounds official, but is not.

Both Keys Electric Co-op and Keys Energy officials urge customers who receive a call of someone threatening to cut power to hang up and call their direct lines: Keys Energy Services is 305-295-1000 and FKEC's is 305-852-2431.

City reports available

The City of Key West released the 2013 annual report, giving the community an insight to the accomplishments of city government over the past year throughout the various departments. The report is available on the city's website at www.keywestcity.com

This is the fifth year the annual report has been an electronic-only edition. That means a "green" report and an important savings of taxpayers dollars. However, if anyone is unable to access the electronic report, the city can supply a print copy.
