Radio/TV star Arthur Godfrey made a short visit to Key West during which he visited the Hemingway and Audubon houses and had a conch luncheon with Sen. John Spottswood and family.

The Key West Garden Club's Winter Flower Show opened at the garden center at West Martello Tower.

Mrs. Emelina Hayes died at the age of 78. She was the daughter of Carlos Recio, who came from Cuba and established a wholesale mercantile business in Key West.

Mr. and Mrs. Chester J. Conn Jr. of Long Island, N.Y., purchased the three-bedroom home at 3327 Riviera Drive.

In ceremonies at the Naval Air Station the U.S. Air Force's 671st Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron received the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award for providing air defense during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
