MARATHON -- A former Marathon High School teacher sentenced to five years of probation in 2011 for possession of cocaine lost an appeal last Wednesday.

The 3rd District Court of Appeal affirmed Monroe County Judge Ruth Becker's sentence for Robert Brian Lalena, 43. He was arrested by sheriff's office deputies in March 2011

Lalena was charged with cocaine possession after a Monroe County sheriff's deputy accused him of tossing crack on the ground when she approached him.

He was an alternative education instructor who tought students in the drop-out prevention program. He had been a teacher at the high school since 2003.
