Airport closed briefly
Air traffic at the Florida Keys-Marathon Airport was halted for an hour Monday after the landing gear on a small plane broke and the plane skidded off the runway.
Pilot David Hill was practicing emergency landings at the airport shortly after 12 p.m. when the plane's main landing gear snapped during the landing and the plane skidded on its belly, said Don DeGraw, Marathon airport manager.
Neither Hill nor his passenger were injured, and the plane suffered only minor damage, DeGraw said.
Woman hurt in scooter crash
A Key West woman riding as a passenger on a scooter suffered a broken leg when it was caught between the scooter and a car in an 8:12 p.m. Saturday crash in Old Town, according to police.
The woman, whose name was not available Monday, was taken to Lower Keys Medical Center then airlifted to Miami with severe injuries to her leg, but no apparent life-threatening injuries otherwise, said police spokeswoman Alyson Crean.
The crash occurred at William and Caroline streets and neither the car nor the scooter were traveling very fast as they had both been stopped at stop signs shortly before the wreck, Crean said.
5 boaters rescued
The Coast Guard rescued five people, including a 4-year-old girl, when their 20-foot pleasure craft was swamped with water and capsized due to motor failure Sunday morning.
No serious injuries were reported. The boat was located near the reef.
Those aboard had life jackets, flares and a working VHF radio that greatly helped in the 11 a.m. rescue, said Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Peter Bermont.
