• An armed expedition against Cuba failed when the attemptto launch the boat ended with the truck in the water. Three men were arrested with ammunition and guns.

• Secretary of State Tom Adams appointed Ed Knight to head his reelection campaign in Monroe County.

• The Coast Guard picked up another 30 Cuban refugees, bringing the total to 80 refugees in three days, leading to speculation about the arrival of Harold Derber's much-touted refugee ferry service.
