Motorcyclist killed on U.S. 1

A Key Largo man was killed Tuesday night in Marathon when he reportedly lost control of a motorcycle and hit a tree, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Jonathan O'Malley, 33, was riding a 2008 Suzuki northbound on U.S. 1 at Mile Marker 52 around 11:52 p.m. when he lost control and struck the center median, said Lt. Kathy McKinney.

The motorcycle then struck a tree in the median, throwing O'Malley from the bike. O'Malley then struck a tree and was pronounced dead at the scene, McKinney said.

There were no passengers and no other vehicles involved. O'Malley was not wearing a helmet, reports state.

Witnesses at the scene told troopers that O'Malley was speeding but investigators were still calculating how fast he was going as of Thursday morning, McKinney said.

Alcohol was believed to be a factor in the crash, reports state.

The motorcycle was totaled in the crash, and troopers shut down the northbound lanes of U.S. 1 for more than three hours while working to clear the scene.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies rerouted traffic, so the road was not completely blocked for the duration of that time, McKinney added.
