Zecca sentencing delayed again

A former Islamorada Coast Guard commander facing 10 years in prison in a Marathon murder plot now will be sentenced on July 2.

Dennis Zecca had been scheduled before U.S. District Judge Jose E. Martinez on March 25 in Key West, but was rescheduled last week and again Thursday.

Prosecutors say Zecca attempted to pay an undercover informant $20,000, or a kilogram of cocaine, to shoot and kill Marathon Realtor Bruce Schmitt during the 2012 Christmas holidays.

The most recent delay was due to Schmitt's request that he be heard at sentencing and scheduling conflicts therein.

Wisteria Island burns again

A fire broke out on Wisteria Island again Thursday, two days after a large arson fire reportedly was sparked by a liveaboard with a flare gun.

Key West firefighters were aware that a boater reported seeing a spark or smoke to the Coast Guard early Thursday morning, but were instructed not to respond unless there was a danger of loss of life, said Key West Fire Marshal Danny Blanco. Firefighters had received no calls for service and had not responded as of Thursday afternoon, he added.

The call was reported about 6 a.m., said Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Peter Bermont.
