Thomas A. Ratcliffe, 61, of Key West, Fla. passed away Sunday, March 23, 2014 at Lower Keys Medical Center, Key West, Fla.

He was born on May 20, 1952 in Camden, Ala. to the late Irby and Mabel (Adams) Ratcliffe. Tom attended Troy State University receiving his B.A. in Accounting. He then attended the University of Alabama receiving his M.A. in Accounting and his Ph.D in Accounting.

Tom was the Technical Director, AICPA Center for Plain English Accounting, Senior Accounting and Auditing Technical Advisor, Warren Averett, LLC, Director Emeritus of Troy University School of Accountancy. Tom served as President of the Alabama Society of CPAs in 2002, Chairman of the Accounting and Review Services Committee 2005 through 2008, on the Private Company Financial Reporting Committee 2007 through 2008, on the Auditing Standards Board 2008 through 2011. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Alabama Society of CPAs.

Tom was an icon of accounting and auditing with a national following; a thought leader, writer, and advisor to CPAs across the country. He was a passionate advocate for the accounting profession.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Harry Ratcliffe. He is survived by his wife Carol Ann Ratcliffe of Key West, Fla.; sons Michael (Victoria) McEwen of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Clark (Ellen) McEwen, Jr. of North Richland Hills, Texas, daughter Tricia Ratcliffe of Troy, Ala.; sister Sarah Ann Tusing of Canton, Ga.; grandson Dylan Rumble.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday March 27 at 1 p.m. at the Dean-Lopez Funeral Home, 418 Simonton Street Key West, Fla. Visitation will begin at 12 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The First Baptist Church of Montgomery, Alabama, St. Jude Children's Hospital, or the Educational Foundation of the Alabama Society of CPAs.
