• Prisoners in the county jail rioted because the sheriff refused to allow them to stay in their bunks all day. When the prisoners refused to return to their cells, the sheriff ordered tear gas fired in the jail, which ended the riot.

• Monroe County had no traffic fatalities in the first three months of the year. The last fatality was Dec. 22, 1963.

• Key West High School head football coach Harold Allen announced he was leaving to join the University of Miami coaching staff.

• Heidi Himmelberger and Joyce Wade were selected by the Marathon American Legion to attend Girls State.
