50 years ago:

The final building plans for the Searstown shopping Center were submitted to the building department and the building permits were $6,500.

Attorneys were filing an appeal of the conviction of two men arrested for anti-spearfishing law. The state provided that spearfishing was illegal from Long Key north to the Dade County line.

The Navy announced a plan to enlarge the housing units in the Poinciana Place housing. The plan called for the 210 units to be split up making 126 larger apartments.

The Key West Power Squadron, under the leadership of Commander Robert Dopp, was holding its first rendezvous of the new year at the Mud Key Shelter.
