Get prepared for storms now

The Federal Emergency Management Agency reminds residents that now is the time to prepare for a storm; don't wait until one is looming.

Hurricane season begins June 1.

The agency recommends that residents: Develop a disaster plan that includes pets; discuss where to go in an evacuation (a shelter, hotel or to family or friends); develop a family communication plan with someone in another area to be a point of contact. Also assemble a disaster kit and store it in a portable container in case of evacuation. It should include: a minimum three-day supply of food and bottled water; battery-powered radio and flashlights with extra batteries; first aid kit with any prescriptions; manual can opener; emergency contact list; hygiene and personal care items; pet supplies; copies of important papers; and emergency cash or credit cards.
