Early Thursday morning, a Miami Beach man was driving a 2009 Volkswagen and ran his car into a light pole flipping it, shutting down traffic on the Overseas Highway.
Nikita Shklyaev, 21, was traveling southbound at Mile Marker 98 when his vehicle traveled onto the shoulder striking a stop sign, two traffic control signals and knocking down a wooden light pole, according to Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Kathleen McKinney.
The vehicle rolled over and came to rest on its roof after knocking down a second telephone pole causing wires to fall onto the highway. Shklyaev was taken to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier for stabilization, and then transported to a Miami hospital.
U.S. 1 was closed for under an hour, according to FHP.
Charges are pending and McKinney said alcohol was not suspected to be involved.
