Dennis Chappell, formerly of Key West, passed away suddenly on January 31, 2014 in Bocas del Toro, Panama. Dennis lived in Key West for 10 years, then Port Orange, Florida before retiring to Panama a year ago.
Dennis loved the laid back atmosphere of Key West and as a resident of Key West, Dennis most recently worked at the Hemingway House. He enjoyed his work there and his 'Hem House' family. He was a distinguished Vietnam Veteran earning many medals including a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He loved learning and received a Master's Degree, three Bachelor Degrees and five Associate Degrees during his lifetime. Dennis was an expert skydiver and enjoyed scuba diving. His favorite quote was "Not all Those Who Wonder are Lost." A creed that he lived by. He was most happy when he was traveling and seeing the world.
Dennis is survived by his longtime love, Mary (Micki) Carter, a son Christopher (Charlotte) Chappell, a daughter Rynn Cox, granddaughters Jordyn Cox and Morgan Cox, step-granddaughter Courtney Short, brothers Danny (Marsha) Chappell, and Phillip (Deb) Chappell, step-great-grandsons Cutler Short and Caleb Short, numerous nieces and nephews as well as many friends in Key West, Texas and Bocas del Toro, Panama. We will all miss his gentle soul, his kindness, his big smile and great sense of humor.
Dennis was generous with his time and money giving to those less fortunate. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Dennis to the FOCC in Key West or another of his favorite causes, Reef Relief. A private memorial will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2014.
