• Legislative candidate Harry F. Knight asked the Florida Secretary of State for a probe of alleged abuses of absentee ballots with the number of requests past the 1,000 mark.

• Leonard "Mike" Warren was a candidate for reelection to the Anti-Mosquito District. Mike had been blind since an accident when he was a child.

• The Key West Citizen's annual Crusade For Safety campaign began with a contest for safety slogans by school children.

• A Swedish merchant seaman was taken to Galey Hospital where an emergency operation removed a one-inch fish hook from his stomach. The man could not speak English so the doctor did not find out how the hook got in there.

• The Key West Kiwanis Club celebrated its 16th anniversary.
