A 28-year-old mate aboard the 797-foot SKS Tana cargo ship was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center at 10 p.m. Tuesday after being shocked in the face while working on a electric switchboard, according to the Coast Guard.
The ship was 103 miles west of Key West when the incident occurred.
The mate suffered a reported 440-volt shock to his face when the switchboard short-circuited, said Lt. Peter Bermont.
He was airlifted aboard a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater. A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Key West also responded.
