Woman drowns in canal

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said Friday it appears 71-year-old Dalia Maria Perez drowned in a canal Thursday.

Deputies and paramedics were called to a house on South Layton Drive shortly after 4:30 p.m. after a neighbor reported seeing the woman clinging to a docked personal watercraft in the water, reports state.

The neighbor jumped in the water, pulled Perez to shore and began CPR.

Perez was taken to Fishermen's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy will be performed, but investigators reported it appeared she drowned after falling into the canal.
